Thames Barrier annual closure

Article text
Today was the annual closure of the Thames Barrier in Woolwich which coincided with the thirtieth anniversary of opening of the barrier in 1984. The weather was perfect and the Thames was as still as a mill pond in exceptional conditions. We arrived at 11am and were there in time to witness the gates being lifted slightly higher to allow an 'under spill' - water to pass under the gates at low tide. This prevents too high a pressure accumulating behind the gates.

A number of people travelled to watch the event which I covered for the Demotix Press agency with a number of images from throughout the process, until the gates were eventually opened again at around 12.30pm. Click HERE to read more about the day.
